Notes On Sensory Processing Disorder

By William Stone

Disorder associated with sensory basically refers to a neurological condition that emerges when the information related to sensory organs that is perceived by an individual leads to responses which are abnormal. The information received from the brain is actually not organized as expected. In real sense there has been no widely accepted form of treatment of sensory processing disorder.

This kind of problem is mostly seen in children although adults may also get affected. Such problem is mostly identified in developmental disorders. SPD actually cannot be noticed as a stand alone condition. It likely that this condition only affects a single sense such as taste, touch or hearing but also there are possibilities that such condition can actually affect several senses. Basically the symptoms of this condition mostly exist on a spectrum.

For example, in some children the sound produced by a leaf blowing can lead to them vomiting. When touched, you may find these children screaming. Textures of certain types of foods can also cause them to recoil. This is not usually the case to all of them as some of them appear not to be responding to the things in their surroundings.

Most often a huge number of children suffering from such a problem actually begin as fussy offspring. As they continue to grow they become more anxious. These kids basically have lot of difficulties while handling any change. They basically have a tendency of having collapses and even throwing tantrums. Most of such children actually lack regular symptoms but these symptoms appear from time to time.

Though we are living in modernized word the actual causes of this problem has not been clearly identified. This has made treatment of the illness so difficult to the families having children suffering from such problem. This has been contributed also by the fact that SPD has not yet been recognized for medical diagnosis.

Treatment also involves helping the affected in trying to be used in things which were problematic to them. A common treatment method referred to as developmental individual difference relationship model has a popular therapy part often regarded to as floor time method. This method is composed of multiple sessions where the child usually plays with the parent for about twenty minutes.

Sensory integration is the kind of treatment that is used in management of this disorder. The main objective of this treatment is to ensure that the child is basically challenged in a playful manner so as to ensure that this child responds effectively and he has the ability to function in a normal way. Developmental individual difference relationship based is another type of therapy that is actually in applied in the management of this disorder.

The treatment of this condition is often regarded to as sensory integration. The main objective of this treatment it to make sure that the child in challenged in the form fun and other playful manner. This increases the ability of child in responding appropriately to the environment.
